Rochester Coalition for Police Reform

If you share our vision of a Rochester where law enforcement is accountable to the communities they serve, where policing is non-discriminatory, and where the fundamental rights of people are respected with fairness and dignity, we would like to hear from you.

Our mission is to end discriminatory and unjust policing in the Rochester NY Metro area by building and mobilizing a powerful, visible, and lasting movement that promotes public safety and policing practices based on accountability, transparency, and respect.

The Coalition is currently working on the following measures that have provided checks and balances on police conduct, improving transparency and building trust in other communities:

  • Establish an independent civilian review board with subpoena power
  • Use personal police body cameras. Communities that have used them report up to an 88 percent reduction in number of citizen complaints between the year prior to and following camera deployment
  • End unconstitutional stop and frisk policies based on racial profiling
  • Educate the community concerning their consent to search rights when stopped by police
  • Police officer training to reduce racial profiling and improve interactions with citizens with disabilities
  • Community Safety Agenda

To establish transparency, an effective system of checks and balances independent of police control is essential. Cooperation and communication empowers a community and creates a police force that is accountable to the community it serves.
